In a perfect world, South Carolina drivers would spend their daily commutes enjoying sunshine and clear skies. However, inclement weather and dangerous conditions cannot always be avoided. In fact, almost a quarter of all vehicle crashes in America are the result of bad weather.
Researchers estimate that almost 1,235,000 car accidents occur each year because of adverse weather, according to a report from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). Additionally, these conditions result in approximately 418,000 injuries and 5,000 fatalities per year, according to the DOT.
Inclement weather conditions for South Carolina drivers often includes:
- Hurricanes
- Rain
- Sleet
- Snow
- Fog
- Ice
- Severe crosswinds
- Slick pavement due to rain, snow, ice, or sleet
To reduce your risk of being involved in a weather-related car accident, here are some safety tips that you can follow when driving in bad weather conditions:
- Snow, ice, and rain on the road can all reduce the amount of traction your vehicle’s tires have on the pavement. This means that your car’s potential to hydroplane, skid, swerve, or spin out is significantly increased. Slow down to avoid a crash.
- Be prepared for bad weather conditions by making sure your car’s tires, brakes, and headlights are well-maintained and ready for the road.
- When driving in severe weather, accelerate and brake slowly. Accelerating too quickly increases your chances of hydroplaning, skidding, or spinning out. Applying the brakes abruptly can also cause a skid.
- Increase the distance between you and other drivers on the road. It takes a longer time for your car to slow down in slick road conditions. By increasing the distance between you and other cars, you can reduce your chances of accidentally rear-ending another driver.
- If your car is skidding over a slick portion of the road, remember to remain calm. While you may be tempted to, refrain from immediately slamming your foot on the brakes. Doing so could cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Instead, take your foot off the gas and gently direct your car along the road with your steering wheel. Avoid making and dramatic turns, as your car could swerve off the road. Try to do as little as possible until your car passes over the slick portion of the road.
- Avoid driving in fog if possible. If you must drive, use your low-beam headlights (not the high beams), reduce your speed, and increase your following distance.
